Matazo Kayama (1927 – 2004) is a Japanese artist who studied at the Painting Academy in Kyoto and later learnt traditional ‘Nihonga’ techniques at Tokyo National Academy of Fine Arts. Kayama’s works are unique, blending modern Western art, traditional ‘Rimpa’ Japanese painting, and Chinese ink paintings. Kayama held his first international solo exhibition in New York in 1961, exhibiting at the Central Museum of Beijing and the British Museum. A large retrospective was held at Tokyo’s National Art Centre in 2009.
