American artist Robert Rauschenberg (1925 - 2008) is recognised as one of the Twentieth Century’s most influential and prolific artists. He is credited with bridging the gap between the movements of Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. A pioneer of the ‘Transfer Drawing’ process, he experimented in technologically sophisticated combinations of photographs and drawings. Since 1951, Rauschenberg’s work has been exhibited extensively, in the U.S. and internationally, and in 1993 he was awarded the National Medal of Arts.
